Passive Income Basics: Build Money That Earns While You Sleep

Dividends, interest, and small income streams that compound over time — and what 'passive' really means.

Not financial advice

Everything on this site is general information and personal opinion for educational purposes only. It is not regulated financial advice, and it does not take your individual circumstances into account. Always do your own research and speak to a qualified financial adviser before making investment, tax, pension or debt decisions.

Passive income is not free money. It usually requires money, time, or skill upfront, then pays out repeatedly afterwards. The goal is to separate your income from your hours.

The honest hierarchy Dividends from index funds and shares come from capital you already have. Rent from property comes from capital or leverage. Royalties and digital products come from work you did once. Affiliate income comes from an audience you have built.

Start with dividends Dividend-paying index funds or ETFs give you a share of company profits without you picking individual stocks. Reinvest those dividends and they buy more shares, which produce more dividends.

Build one income stream at a time Most people fail by trying to start five projects at once. Pick one stream, get it to one hundred pounds a month, then add another. The first stream is the hardest.

Realistic timelines A blog, YouTube channel, or affiliate site can take one to two years to earn meaningful money. A dividend portfolio depends on how much you can put in. There is no shortcut that is also safe.

Measure the real return Always divide your income by the hours and capital invested. Five hundred pounds a month sounds great until you realise it cost three hundred hours to build.
